Sea Turtle by Junko Stickney
Junko Stickney favors organic forms in her metalsmithing, and after visiting the Big Island of Hawaii she wanted to express the qualities of a sea turtle she encountered - its adorable movements, its dignified prescence that evokes a sense of timelessness, and the fleeting nature of a living creature's existence.
This piece uses recylced copper and galvanized steel. Created for the Gallery's Zone 0: New Opportunities for Art in the Garden exhibit, it is light and made to be installed on a wall. It measures roughly 16 x 20" and extends at most 5" off the wall.
