Stitched Supper: Oysters By Danae Lenda
Lenda's work is influenced by the age of social media that she grown up in, thinking about how we create and perform our identities online. Trends like "the phone eats first" is a prime example of the ways we show off our lifestyles and status, making food and the bodies they are meant to nourish into trends. This piece is part of a series that is influenced by her summer teaching art on Martha's Vineyard, and the way certain foods (lobster, oysters, etc.) felt like status symbols rather than nourishment. Incorporating sewing, she also contemplates the traditional roles of women in both cooking and consumption. Stitched Supper: Oysters is a cheerful acrylic painting of a plate of oysters on canvas stitched onto an acrylic on canvas checkered background with a lemon slice and shucking knife that measures 10" x .75" x 10."
